Friday Focus - December 18, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:
*I've been in classrooms to sub more than to see what you've got going on, so this list is short. Sorry!

  • Middle school students engaged in dissecting sheep brains.
  • Students recording videos to publish a scene from their realistic fiction stories they wrote.
  • Students coordinating a gift for a peer in the hospital.
  • A student in quarantine emailed me to tell me how much she misses school and does so much better with her learning in person with her teachers.

Upcoming Events:
Monday - wear something festive to wear your jeans :)
Tuesday - Polar Pajama day
Wednesday - Ugly (I mean festive) sweater day

Please rest up and enjoy your holiday vacation!

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*Reminder to turn in your lockdown procedures sign-off sheet before break.
*Please be ready to welcome students back (think #Signficant72) and to review expectations/routines while bringing the Employability Skills or Work Habits rubric at each building level back to life.

Friday Focus - December 11, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • Virtual escape room with students working together in partners to apply what they've learned and have fun at the same time.
  • HS Student council and our incredible Strive Mentor superheroes working the coat drive to bring in over 150 coats.  Then our amazing staff got right to work making sure kids who needed them got them!
  • When students began working on math problems in partners, the students in BlueJeans were put in breakout rooms of two so they could also work in partners.
  • Students collaborating to build a marble roller coaster to learn about potential energy, velocity, kinetic energy and total energy.
  • In a conversation with a student and teacher to discuss behavior, the teacher communicated the expectation, the unacceptable behavior, the consequence and then the continued message of care and support to help the student be successful (and yes, still having the consequence!)
  • When a student was informed of having been in close contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID and he would need to be quarantined, he didn't dwell on having to go home...he said that he felt bad for whoever that was and hoped the student would be ok.

Upcoming Events:
Wednesday - MS Faculty Meeting at 3:00

*Review lockdown drill procedures with each of your classes sometime next week. I'll have slides/forms out by Monday for this (MS staff I'll go over this in our meeting and you can do before break).

Remember...It's only comfy clothes from here on out!!! I will be putting dress days in the student announcements too for holiday fun.

Friday Focus - December 4, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • I heard many great class discussions on Monday to welcome kids back, re-establish connections and ease them back in.
  • Students practicing Spanish in a Gimkit version of the Game Imposter (that's the latest game they're all addicted to right now!)
  • Teacher reviewing student surveys with the class to get feedback on how class is going -what's working well and what's not working. It was a very productive class dialogue about what would make the class better and some students even volunteered responses that they could do differently for class to be better. I think students opened up after hearing the teacher say they could change something for class to be better for them. Powerful!
  • I cannot even count how many middle school students told me that they like school better in person and don't want to be stuck at home for virtual!
  • Teachers championing for kids - I've seen some parent communications that led to some follow-up from home to help change behaviors. I'm also aware of several of you reaching out to individual students to pull them back in and support them to work on catching up. Thank you for all that each of you are doing to show students we have high expectations and we support them!
  • Multiple colleagues problem solving on how to best support/hold a student accountable. The alignment in expectations is important for students who need our structure!

Upcoming Events:
Wednesday - Workout Wednesday

 -HS Faculty Meeting

*No one hour delay schedule in December for Advisory (December is short enough!)

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*I have been trying to send a parent newsletter out each week. If you ever have anything to add to it, please send it my way. This could simply be a picture of something students are doing in your class, special project information, club info, etc. Anything to highlight the great work that is happening in our school!!

*As we near winter break, please keep in mind that the more you deviate from your normal classroom routine, the more students will with their behaviors. This time of the year can also become very stressful in some homes, which students are very aware of and can display in their attitudes/behaviors. Please continue to be the great model that you are for our students with empathy, expectations and support. And reach out to Pupil Services/Admin if you notice a new student concern that we can help support.

*If you missed in a previous update, the Dodgeland website is updated weekly with the information that we have regarding COVID-19 data. Click HERE to see the page. The beginning of the page explains the difference between common pandemic words like isolation and quarantine. Additionally, if you saw the CDC news about a change in recommendations on additional options for quarantine, we are in wait mode. The county health department is obligated by law to follow the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) protocols and guidance in place for isolation/quarantine. An update will be likely coming soon.

*Friendly reminder: If you haven't updated your iPad, please do so this weekend. The latest version is iPadOS 14.2. See Brad's email from Dec 1 for more information.

Friday Focus - November 13, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • Many students (and advisors) contributed to the Veterans Day video. Thank You!!
  • Middle school teachers have pivoted to virtual with breakout rooms, student presentations, kahoots, modeling science labs, scheduling 1:1/small group sessions during study hall to support students, and delivery of instruments to homes. Thank you to everyone who has helped reach out/check-in with students that were not in class and make sure they have what they need to continue learning.
  • I have continued to have high school students reach out to me asking about if we are switching to virtual, which is followed by how much they want to be here in school, because they learn better in person from their teachers!
  • Teachers problem-solving together on how to support a student who is struggling in several classes.
  • When looking at a new proficiency criteria rubric for a new standard, students were given time to digest it: read independently, highlight, share what they noticed about the different levels and asked some great follow-up questions to understand what they should learn and be able to do.
  • We made it through the student email debacle of 2020 (that's what I'm calling it).  If you were annoyed with that situation, I was too...my inbox blew up with hundreds of emails in a matter of minutes (not to mention all the teacher phone calls in the same time frame). However, I still saw some positives...many students emailed teachers and I out of concern to report it. Several students replied to all to stop doing it so they could focus on work...some of those students are those who used to abuse email and this time tried to be leaders! Several students also emailed me to apologize for their part in it. See...there's always good if you look for it, even if it is buried in hundreds of emails. :)
Upcoming Events:
Wednesday - Workout Wednesday
    MS Faculty meeting
Thursday - one hour delay schedule, with the 1st of hour of the day for Advisory. Yes-virtually for Middle School too....I'll send a separate email with details.

Monday Nov 23 and Tuesday Nov 24 - Professional work days. Use this gift of time to catch up, plan ahead, and focus on whatever professional learning or planning/grading tasks that you need to do so you can enjoy a work free Thanksgiving break!  I do have several meetings on both days, but if you need to meet with me about anything, please go here to schedule a time: https://calendly.com/dodgejohnson/15min

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*Google Chat has been turned off for students. If you were using it with students, I'm sorry, but we had many abusing it.

Here's your opportunity to order Dodgeland gear and support a good cause (proceeds go to #AvaStrong!) Order HERE until November 18th.

Friday Focus - November 6, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • Homecoming is different than it's ever been with so many of our Dodgeland traditions missing. When students were complaining about it, you helped remind them of what they did get to have this year, knowing that other high schools didn't. We can be sad about what we're missing, but we can also focus on the good!
  • Teachers enjoying the fun of Homecoming dress up days (and some of your choices made my day to see!)
  • Great idea sharing discussions in our faculty meeting breakout rooms.
  • Students working together to build physical models to learn the different parts of DNA (don't worry...with sanitization!)
  • Students working together in small groups (with some in breakout rooms in BlueJeans to include blended learners in the collaboration).

Upcoming Events:
Today: Homecoming court parade outside this afternoon (see Marcia's email for time/details).

Tonight's Homecoming game will be livestreaming on our district youtube channel.

Wednesday - Veterans Day - we obviously can't gather together for our traditional Veterans Day assembly, but there will be a video to show during lunch/advisory that will have many components of the assembly that are a part of our traditional assembly.

Wednesday was a scheduled HS faculty meeting - please plan to use for your department discussions. If you would like to meet with me for anything I will have Office Hours in my BlueJeans.

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
As I shared in our faculty meeting, we plan to start sending out concerns letters to parents of students who have been at home for blended learning and are not participating/not doing well.  Please report any students that you are concerned about by Wednesday, November 18th here:

MS Blended Learning Student Concerns

HS Blended Learning Student Concerns

Here’s your opportunity to order Dodgeland gear and support a good cause? Order HERE November 2 - November 18th.

All proceeds will benefit the Ava Finger family to help support the many financial needs that have come from her tragic mountain biking accident that caused paralysis. We know that Ava is working hard in her recovery and we want to support her and her family with our #DodgelandStrong support.

Friday Focus - October 30 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • Students checking their hear rate after physical activity and then after relaxing activities to see how their heart rate changes.
  • Student small group discussion of the the class quote of the day.

  • A teacher that has previously used the chalktalk strategy modified it to be completely virtual since it wasn't possible to social distance for it. Students went through different pages of a jamboard responding to different thoughts/questions and each other. This also allowed those from home to participate with their classmates who were in person.
  • Good bags of appreciation put together by our FFA students.

You get an extra hour of sleep/relaxation this weekend!

Upcoming Events: Homecoming Week Dress up Days (to go along with a movie theme)

Monday- Breakfast Club -Pajama Day
7:30AM progress reports will be run

Tuesday- Moana - Hawaiian Day

Wednesday- Dodgeball - Sports jerseys
   MS/HS Faculty Meeting at 3:00 *Topic - assessments/re-assessments

Thursday- Grease Lightning - Throwback

Friday - Friday Night Lights - Purple Pride

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*A common COVID contact tracing question: How does admin determine which days to contact trace if someone tests positive? Answer: The 2 days before the individual became symptomatic.

*We will be adding the Work Habits domains to ARP sections and Employability Skills to Study Halls. My apologies that this got missed. Our discussions last year identified this as a way to provide feedback on how students behave/utilize their time during these times. You don't have to worry about this now for this run of progress reports, but we will add this for moving forward.

When you are looking in PowerTeacher Pro Standards, if you click on a student's proficiency level under a domain, you can then click on the professional judgement tool and see the student's evidence in that domain to help you determine if you need to override the domain grade. Here is what that looks like with the yellow arrow pointing to the icon that you can click on for this:

What's Possible with Green Screens in the Classroom

Friday Focus - October 22, 2020

Great Things I Noticed:
  • Class gallery walk with students providing others with feedback on post-it notes, while referring back to the proficiency criteria rubric (what a great way for them to really understand the learning target criteria and give/receive feedback for learning!)
  • Compassion seems to be infectious...I had several observations of students trying to help support someone else this week: one student emailed words of encouragement to a peer feeling very down (it got flagged by our filter which is why I knew), a student asked a teacher for an opportunity to step in the hallway to talk to a peer that needed encouragement, while subbing in a class a student told me she was emailing those at home to make sure they knew what to do without the teacher in Bluejeans. Our students are amazing and I know this comes from the great models they have in YOU!
Upcoming Events:
Workout Wednesday - deadline to register for XPD's (see Dr. Thompson's email)
Thursday, Oct 29 Picture Retake Day and ONE HOUR DELAY schedule. Students will start in their Advisory for ACP activities at high school, ACP/Second Step activities at Middle School.

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
The cell phones are beginning to inch their way back into distracting existence, including at MS where they haven't ever been allowed.  I will pull out our cell phone videos from last year and put into slides for this weeks advisories for you to use that shares the research on cell phones being addicting and to explain why we have our "stupid rules." ;) They're not stupid rules, they're intended to help students be free of distractions for learning.

Staff Tech Tip of the Week:
Staff Resources Site, Updated: The DSD Staff Resources site has been updated with: PowerSchool>PowerTeacher Pro UserGuides and BlueJeans Meeting recording from October 1, 2020. Another addition was made to Whiteboard Apps>Article: Tips and Tricks for Teaching with Jamboard.

Just for a laugh...

Thursday, October 8, 2020

Friday Focus - October 9, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • Sharing a finished product of a project, while having students refer to the proficiency criteria rubric to share what they saw in the project and where they thought it would be scored on the rubric. What a great way to have students understand the levels of proficiency!
  • Teamwork in SO many places...help to cover classes, help to offer bathroom breaks, communicating with a student's next hour teacher to let them know about an issue going on to help support the student, and of course Mrs. Landaal's amazing sub rescue for Wednesday lunch!
  • A discussion with students concerned about the possibility of COVID requiring all to switch to virtual...because they know they learn better from their teachers in person and they want to be here with structure and a schedule. Because YOU make the difference for them!
  • Despite a teacher absence, teacher recorded lessons were ready in schoology for a student to airplay for the class to continue learning. Kids knew the routine, knew what to do and moved on with class without a hitch!
  • More and more students are starting to sound like YOU. When one student was complaining, "I am SO sick of this COVID stuff, I just want it all back to normal," one of his peers replied, "Do you really think anybody likes this? No one does, we just have to move on with what we have and be glad we're here."
  • Even though spectators to athletic evens are limited to 2 per athlete, our athletes showed a great deal of sportsmanship and school pride!

Upcoming Events:
Workout Wednesday
Wednesday - 3:05 HS Faculty Meeting in Bluejeans

Picture Retake Day is scheduled for October 21

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*If you have something interesting happening in your classroom and I don't get to see it in action, PLEASE take a picture and send it to me. I have been trying to send out a weekly parent newsletter for each building level on Sundays and love being able to include pictures.

*SOS...seriously, if you're in need of a bathroom break (or even to pretend you're using the bathroom) send Marcia or I an email with the subject line SOS with some details. We're both nutso busy, but surely one of us will see it to help. Better yet...include Laura/Linda and they can radios us.
