Friday Focus - November 13, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • Many students (and advisors) contributed to the Veterans Day video. Thank You!!
  • Middle school teachers have pivoted to virtual with breakout rooms, student presentations, kahoots, modeling science labs, scheduling 1:1/small group sessions during study hall to support students, and delivery of instruments to homes. Thank you to everyone who has helped reach out/check-in with students that were not in class and make sure they have what they need to continue learning.
  • I have continued to have high school students reach out to me asking about if we are switching to virtual, which is followed by how much they want to be here in school, because they learn better in person from their teachers!
  • Teachers problem-solving together on how to support a student who is struggling in several classes.
  • When looking at a new proficiency criteria rubric for a new standard, students were given time to digest it: read independently, highlight, share what they noticed about the different levels and asked some great follow-up questions to understand what they should learn and be able to do.
  • We made it through the student email debacle of 2020 (that's what I'm calling it).  If you were annoyed with that situation, I was too...my inbox blew up with hundreds of emails in a matter of minutes (not to mention all the teacher phone calls in the same time frame). However, I still saw some positives...many students emailed teachers and I out of concern to report it. Several students replied to all to stop doing it so they could focus on work...some of those students are those who used to abuse email and this time tried to be leaders! Several students also emailed me to apologize for their part in it. See...there's always good if you look for it, even if it is buried in hundreds of emails. :)
Upcoming Events:
Wednesday - Workout Wednesday
    MS Faculty meeting
Thursday - one hour delay schedule, with the 1st of hour of the day for Advisory. Yes-virtually for Middle School too....I'll send a separate email with details.

Monday Nov 23 and Tuesday Nov 24 - Professional work days. Use this gift of time to catch up, plan ahead, and focus on whatever professional learning or planning/grading tasks that you need to do so you can enjoy a work free Thanksgiving break!  I do have several meetings on both days, but if you need to meet with me about anything, please go here to schedule a time: https://calendly.com/dodgejohnson/15min

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*Google Chat has been turned off for students. If you were using it with students, I'm sorry, but we had many abusing it.

Here's your opportunity to order Dodgeland gear and support a good cause (proceeds go to #AvaStrong!) Order HERE until November 18th.
