Friday Focus - September 25, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • Staff members helping to cover for others in their absence or to assist with bathroom breaks.
  • Staff assisting with supervision in the hallways (which is enjoyable getting to chat with students at the same time!)
  • Guest speaker into a classroom via Bluejeans for the class to learn about business in the food industry (great connection to careers in Food Science).
  • Students in a study hall getting 5 minutes (after their 10 minutes of reading) to share with others about the book they are reading.  When kids talk to each other about books, they're more likely to get book recommendations than when teachers suggest it.
  • We have had some students test us in different classrooms. I have noticed many of you following through with high expectations for student behaviors, while building connections with them to see their strengths, yet still address concerns.  I have seen emails to students and parents to point out the strengths and the concerns. Thank you! This is how kids know you care and that you are here to support them to be their best, even when they don't think they can or should!
  • While covering in a classroom for lunch students were having a very respectful debate about Apple vs Samsung phones, sharing pros/cons and their own experiences. When I commented on how respectful their debate was a student said, "Well that's thanks to the English teachers always teaching us how to do this the right way!"

Upcoming Events:
*Workout Wednesday
*Thursday - 3:05 Bluejeans office hour for grading help

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*Ordinarily our schedule for faculty meetings moving forward (as last year) is 1st Wednesday combined MS/HS, 2nd Wednesday HS, 3rd Wednesday MS.  We will NOT have the combined MS/HS meeting on Oct 7th because that is the day/time for staff flu shots.

*Request from the custodial crew: Due to the extra sanitizing that needs to be done across the building in all areas (and takes a great deal of time in comparison to normal custodial duties) they ask for your help with the following:
  • Move your garbage/bins and green towel bucket outside your door so they can move throw quicker in collections to save time.
  • If you need your Rejuvnol bottle filled, please also leave that outside your door so they can refill it for you to be ready for the next day.

Grading Update:
*Grading update: I believe you will see powerteacher pro looking different with domains in there now (*Note - I only put domains, not learning targets). Kay will have some directions out soon for you to see what to do moving forward and what you can do for assignments/assessments you have already recorded. I put on the calendar a BlueJeans session for Thursday at 3:05 just to help answer any questions you may have.

In regards to athletic grade checks, we know that providing a specific standard for a passing grade is challenging this time around. Please consider the following:
-Daily Assignments - is the student completing the majority of the assigned daily assignments and with quality work?
-Class Activities - is the student satisfactorily participating in and completing class activities?
-Assessments - is the student demonstrating understanding and knowledge in exit tickets quizzes, tests or any other type of assessments you are using?

Some additional questions you may have regarding grading:

1.  What do we do now if we already had grades in?
  • Every assignment that you put in to Power Teacher Pro and the grade you gave it, will still be there.
  • Once you see your standards/domains the assignment would just need to be edited to add in the standards that is associated with that assignment and then the grade itself will be edited to the proficiency scale.
2.  What do we share with parents or how do we answer their questions?
  •  I will be sending out a communication to parents this weekend to explain our transition to Target based grading system and why things are looking different for them. I plan to continue having weekly newsletters moving forward to continue to give them bite sized chunks of information about this.
3. When will I learn how to do this?
  • Kay is finalizing some very helpful guides that show screenshots walking you through step by step.
  • We also need to schedule several after school trainings to support you along the way (several because we know your calendars may already be booked up with IEP meetings or other meetings and want to provide many opportunities)
  • Yes.  I truly can appreciate how much is on your plates and how overwhelming this might feel.  However, please know that I'm here to help (as are many others) and it fits within a larger system so it is to our advantage to start at the same time.  Also, if we were ever to go virtual, we will have the advantage of not having to worry about points and percentage, but rather focus on proficiency for the targets and domains.
4. Schoology doesn't transfer?
  • Unfortunately no.  After discussing this with Kay, she shared that it did transfer last year, but it does not transfer now.  She is looking into whether this is a planned update for Schoology down the line.  Many, many schools have begun to use Schoology in the last year, so perhaps there is a plan we are not aware of yet to address this issue.

Tech Tip of the Week:
Here is a video made for students on how to participate in a discussion in Schoology. A great example of what a discussion question can look like, but also helpful when working with students who are participating in a discussion for the first time. We’ll get this open for students to view and share it with them in their notifications in Schoology.

Blogs, Quotes and Tweets:
*You shared a video with students this week about gratitude. Now, here's the adult version with some humor for you: PinkCast: This is How to Make a Gratitude Habit.  Enjoy!!! :) :)

Friday Focus - September 18, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • I appreciate how many of you step out into the hallway at passing time. Your presence helps curb issues, just like an officer on the side of the road gets everyone to slow down the speed!
  • Jeapordy game to make practice of math problems more fun (still lots of math problems, but put into the game).
  • Class activity of "Take a Stand." When given 2 different things to pick as a favorite to "take a stand" for students moved to their favored side of the room, then had to back up their opinion with reasons. Newspaper or Magazine? Sleeping in or Waking up Early? In person school or Virtual? Almost ALL picked in person school!
  • While students were discussing a question in partners, the teacher talked with the students in Bluejeans to give them an opportunity to talk/share.
  • Students working together at the scene of a crime outside (don't worry, it was actually Forensic Science!)
  • Students excited to meet with their STRIVE mentors. Thank you Mechelle and Lisa for coordinating this!
  • I have heard from a number of parents how much they appreciate how well bluejeans livestreaming is going with students being able to keep up with learning and continue to follow a schedule. I am not surprised, because I've been in several classrooms while you had students logged in from home and you are ROCKING it!

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:

  • Thank you for your diligence in having accurate attendance in PowerSchool.  I know the extra steps for you are not easy and appreciate your attention to this. Mrs. Schreier/Mrs. Feilbach will send out a daily report so you can see if you missed a student. Here's a repeat from Mrs. Schreier:
    • If a parent contacts the office, the student is marked out for the day (or period) with the appropriate code (ex: Dr., personal, etc.)
    • If a student is present online (PR-OL), email Mrs. Schreier or Mrs. Feilbach to let them know to change it; OR if you don't see a code, but see the student online you can change it to PR-OL.
    • If you fail to take attendance for a period, it will show blank, which the office interprets as present.
    • If a student is marked absent and there has been no parent contact to the office, it will be changed to unexcused at the end of the day.
    • If a student has been in all classes virtually, but not in Study Hall (because why would they login for study hall?) we will count them as present.
    • My Note: Mrs. Schreier and Mrs. Feilbach spend a LOT of their day looking at attendance. If you don't take attendance in your class, it makes their jobs more difficult to try to figure out if students were here or not.

Events Next Week:
Workout Wednesday - Yes, I was serious about every Wednesday during a pandemic! :)

Friday Focus - September 11, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week:  You all never cease to amaze me as you do the impossible in your classrooms with students both in person and virtually.  Our students and our parents notice the incredible work that you are doing!

*Class Kahoot to check prior knowledge before digging into the first unit.
*A new student shared that the teachers here are so much nicer than his previous school.
*Small groups creating public service announcement videos for lab safety.
*Students helping each other with iPad skills (we have many new students unfamiliar with navigating Notability, Schoology and google docs on the iPad).
*Extra help in the hallways to reinforce face coverings (HS lunch time was SO much better on Thursday!)
*Emails to parents regarding individual students - starting with a positive and then sharing a concern (thank you for including me on those, then I'm aware and can follow-up on to support).
*Great faculty discussions in our virtual meetings...good questions, problem-solving and brainstorming.

When students were asked "Please share one thing you liked in school this week" here are some responses to affirm the work you're doing:

  • I enjoyed a lot of the class activities I’ve done so far, and I really like a lot of the teachers I have this year. They are all very respectful and kind, I enjoy being able to see them.
  • How the teachers are taking the change, keeping calm. And planning if the school has to go virtual again
  • How the teachers learn about us
  • All of my teachers were very very helpful with virtual learning!
  • I liked that we got to go back to school
  • How fun the teacher are and seeing my friends
  • Actually being inside of school
  • I like playing getting to know people games
  • The games we played.

*Games and Jamboard came up many times in student comments. :)

Events Next Week:
Wednesday - Workout Wednesday (I think this should be every Wednesday during a COVID school year)

*MS faculty--we originally had a meeting scheduled for the 16th but I canceled it due to our grading discussion this week.

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*I know that some of your concerns moving into content now are the gaps in skills from the COVID slide. I recently read the advice to teach "Just in Time" vs "Just in Case." Meaning...start teaching YOUR content for THIS year and if there's a prerequisite that students need, teach it when they need it.

*If you take your class outside for a mask break, students should still be socially distanced. If they are close to each other, then masks need to be back on.
*I'm still working on getting through all Schoology courses/Syllabi...if you haven't sent me your syllabi I'll look for it in your Schoology Course.
*Please get your seating charts to Linda/Laura.
*Attendance for blended: I know this has NOT been easy and I want it to be as few steps as possible for you. If you see a student in BlueJeans that doesn't already have a code in PowerSchool, please mark as present online. If they're already marked IL and in your BlueJeans please send Laura/Linda an email to let them know and they will change it. Do NOT stress about doing it right away when you are trying to be an octopus in your classroom....just write it down on a post-it and email them later when you have time. *Grading - You are all so amazingly patient and flexible. I still don't have answers, but will communicate them once I do!

Do your students need to improve on their email skills? Maybe this could help you in teaching them email etiquette:

Blogs, Quotes & Tweets:
Not a blog post this time, but a youtube clip from Chase Mielke on Self-Forgiveness in his new Thriving Educator series. I hope you take a few minutes for yourself to hear this message: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwLaDBacq-8. Be kind to yourself!

P.S. I have Mielke's book The Burnout Cure: Learning to Love Teaching Again and am happy to loan it out. Just let me know.

I LOVE this reminder of the small things that matter to our students:

Friday Focus - September 4, 2020

Great Things I Noticed this Week: You all ROCKED the start of the school year. Seriously! With all the unknowns, you led the way in your classrooms. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

  • Staff helping each other out with technology tips after hearing issues.
  • Students introducing partners to the class.
  • Day 1 -submit 2 truths and a lie, Day 2-class kahoot to figure out the lie of each classmate.
  • Low stakes "get to know you" activities that are also submitted into Schoology to make sure that students know how to navigate the course and how to submit assignments. (We have MANY new students so this is important.)
  • Daily QR code check-in for students with a fun question like "if you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go?) and a question to find out how students are doing or see if they have any questions.
  • Small group work, but with the modification of only one student writing with the marker (because there's less to sanitize then after).
  • Schoology set up with a Class Informational folder at the top that also contains a folder of tech info for students.

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:

  • We have already started having student absences with students trying to get onto Bluejeans.  Treat each class as a possible livestreaming--check to see if you have someone logging in from home. Which also means, if you haven't shown your students where to find the bluejeans number for your class, do this TODAY!
  • Please turn in your seating charts to the office ASAP. You can either give Laura/Linda paper copy or email it. They will be putting them all into one binder.
  • Please add this to your Schoology course for students to access if they are having tech/login issues (or for new students): http://bit.ly/DSDTech
  • Guest teacher binders: bell schedule, your schedule, class lists, seating charts, and special concerns that a guest teacher must know (i.e. health concerns), lunch hour info. Have 1-2 emergency/generic lessons that can be easily utilized by a guest teacher.
  • A specialized extra duty (for lunch) will be put in your mailboxes. Please keep track of the days that you have your class for lunch.
Upcoming Events: REST UP THROUGH THE 3 DAY WEEKEND!!!!
  • Now that we have face coverings and all the other COVID business down, Marcia and I will have information for next week's advisory time to cover handbook information for students.
  • Tuesday - Chicken Nugget day (yes, that deserves noting)
  • Wednesday - Workout Wednesday
    • HS Faculty meeting at 3:05 in Bluejeans
  • Thursday - HS Faculty meeting at 3:05 in Bluejeans
If you want to plan ahead--Picture Day is September 14th.

Blogs, Quotes & Tweets:
*How To Cut Your Preparation Time and Lower Stress - I personally love this technique and use it often, but it only works if I write on a post-it note what I'm working on so if I get interrupted (or distract myself!) I can get back to it and stay focused.

*From a student on day 1: "We haven't been out of school for this long all our lives. We need to be here."
