Friday Focus - August 30, 2019 HERE WE GO!

Great Things I Noticed this Week:

  • Great conversations in our PD and staff meetings focused on what our students need and problem-solving how to improve structures to ensure success for our students. There were so many great reflections shared, along with connections made between staff.  It is these conversations that help us to work together for our students, along with sharing great ideas with each other for the first week of school. Thank you for your collaboration!
  • You all tried a new tool to connect with our families. Way to go with your flipgrid videos. If you're thinking about this as a possible classroom tool, keep scrolling down.
  • SO many excited students and parents back in the building looking forward to the school year.

Events Next Week:
Tuesday - 1st day :)
-Wear your Dodgeland shirts, jeans and comfy shoes for the day!
-Students will start in Aspire to get their schedules, you'll share the video from Mrs. Modaff and I and then go over iPad expectations with them. (The video link will be in your email from me by Monday.)

Wednesday -11/12th graders to MS gym during ASPIRE
   HS Faculty meeting at 3:15

Thursday -9/10th graders to MS gym during ASPIRE
  HS Faculty meeting at 3:15

Friday -7/8th graders to MS gym during ASPIRE

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*Next week I will have the testing schedule for you.
*Here's a video you can use in your advisories to teach students about email etiquette: Student Email Tips
*One of the greatest factor that has negative impact on a student’s learning is mobility (with an effect size of -0.34…that’s right negative). But this does not mean a our transient students are doomed to fail. There are things we can do. For example, if the student makes a new friend within two weeks, it begins to wipe out the effect. That is something that we have control over in our classrooms and can easily ensure that we have strategies to welcome students into our school. I will be emailing out a list of students who are new to our school so you can be mindful of this and try to help them make connections with peers during their transition to Dodgeland.

It's almost go time! Always remember...it doesn't matter if you have been in your classroom for 5, 10, 15 or 20 years. When students enter your door on Tuesday, it will be their first. The awe of what you have on your walls will last minutes. The feeling they have when they look into your eyes and you make them feel safe, cared for, and excited about this year is what they will always remember. So, go get it! Change lives! Make it awesome!

Tech Tip of the Week
Learning More About Schoology. Schoology PD course will be available to you today, in Schoology! There are many different ways to learn something new about Schoology: Quick Resources, Videos and Self-Paced Courses. Also, there will be an XPD offering about creating materials but also with a student present so we can see how students can retrieve materials, work on something and submit them back to us.

The almost back to school update...

Reminders for InService week:
Tuesday - wear Dodgeland shirts for our staff photo
Wednesday -professional attire for Open House
*All other times you are good to go with comfy clothes and tennies

"Nuts & Bolts" Notes:
*By the end of this week I will email you details to create your video to go to our school FlipGrid. As I shared in my welcome back letter, I want to have all of us record an intro video to our students/families to have ready by Open House.  Don't worry, this is not labor intensive, just a quick minute to introduce yourself.

*Moving forward, any documents shared from the MS/HS office (i.e. schedules, announcements, handbooks, etc.) will be in the DMS DHS Staff Google Shared Drive. Many shared the frustration of not knowing which drive to look in. Within this drive, anything from previous years will be in a folder simply named OLD Documents.  You can continue to use folders/docs in the ms or hs shared drives that you have been using for collaboration, just know anything shared from the office will be in the DMS DHS drive.
*Handbooks: You will all be receiving paper copies of the staff procedures handbook, as well as the student/parent handbook for your building level.  The revised Staff Procedures handbook is in this drive, which you can also find HERE (if you are logged into your google account). You will notice that the Table of Contents is hyperlinked to make it easier to search for information. If you are curious what has changed, you can see the draft HERE that was given to the school board that has anything new highlighted and anything that was removed is crossed out.

*Could you please take a quick survey for me HERE. (It's a fun one!)

Planning ahead for the 1st week with students:
1st day of school: Wear your Dodgeland shirts, jeans and comfy shoes for your first full day of teaching on your feet since May 31st!
One Hour delay bell schedule, students starting in Aspire.  This time will be used to give students their schedule, make sure all have lockers/organized (if missed Open House) and then build relationships and community with the group. Mrs. Modaff and I will also have a video for you to share with your Aspire.  Yes, with our new schedule, you will have your Aspire/advisory twice so you get to do lots of relationship building. Greg Wolcott would be so proud of our #Significant72 focus!

I will be talking to 2 grade levels at a time in the MS gym to talk about expectations with students and do a fun activity. This will be:
Wednesday during Aspire: 11th/12th grades
Thursday during Aspire: 9/10th grades
Friday during Aspire: 7/8th grades
(No 6th grade since they have 2 days of "Gearing Up for Middle School")
